The Palmeraie district lies about five miles to the north west of Marrakech and legend has it that this extensive palm grove (which contains around 150,000 trees) can be traced back to the 11th century. Apparently, soldiers of the Almoravid sultan Youssef ben Tachfine, after eating dates they had brought back from the Sahara, spat out the stones around their encampment and these germinated over time to form the massive 45 square-mile palm grove that exits today.
In 1992, it was in this fertile area of fields, gardens and orchards that Robert Trent Jones Snr established the original 18-hole layout at Palmeraie Golf Club, the first golf course to make an appearance in Marrakech since the fairways of the Royal course were laid out in 1927. More recently, Stephane Talbot, a former professional at Palmeraie, added a further nine-hole circuit in 2008.

PalmGolf Ourika Golf Club – Marrakech

Designed by the Canadian partnership of Neil Haworth and Stéphane Talbot, PalmGolf Ourika is located south of Marrakech, framed by the striking, often snow-capped Atlas Mountains. The course opened for public play in late summer 2015 and has since established itself as one of the region’s most distinctive modern layouts.

From the back tees, the course stretches to an impressive 6,692 metres, routed across a 180-acre residential estate. The fairways are wide and generously proportioned, bordered predominantly by expansive sandy waste areas that create a refined desert character. Six lakes are strategically integrated into the design, adding both visual contrast and tactical complexity throughout the round.

Developed by the Palmeraie Development Group and managed by Troon Golf, PalmGolf Ourika complements the nearby 27-hole Robert Trent Jones Sr.-designed course at Palmeraie, offering a contemporary counterpoint to its established sister venue.

The agronomy reflects international standards. Penn A-1 Bent grass was selected for the greens, ensuring consistent roll and refined putting surfaces, while Riviera Bermuda grass is used for tees and fairways to provide resilience and optimal year-round playability.

PalmGolf Ourika is Morocco’s first fully cart-only golf club, with concrete paths throughout the course. Each buggy is equipped with an integrated GPS system, assisting players with distance management, club selection and strategic decision-making.

As Stéphane Talbot noted at the opening:
“We are extremely honoured to welcome this new course to the PalmGolf Morocco family. It is our goal to create an extraordinary experience for our members and guests by offering them excellent service, facilities and superior playing surfaces.”

The result is a technically engaging yet accessible layout, defined by space, light and precision — a course that reflects Marrakech’s evolution as a serious international golf destination.

Amelkis Golf Club is widely regarded as one of the most technically refined and visually impressive courses in Marrakech. Situated at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, the course combines strategic design with a dramatic natural backdrop, offering a golfing experience that is both demanding and memorable. Originally designed by Cabell B. Robinson, former associate of Robert Trent Jones Sr., Amelkis opened in 1995 and quickly established itself as a championship-calibre venue. The original 18 holes were later complemented by an additional 9-hole loop, creating a 27-hole complex that allows for varied combinations and tournament flexibility.
